<![CDATA[Student competition supported by lectures from concrete technology experts as a multi-faceted teaching method]]> Fri, 02 Dec 2022 10:37:06 +0100 Mielnik, Anna
rodzaj: rozdział/fragment książki
Abstrakt: The study work aims to present a teaching method introduced in the design task for second-year undergraduate students in the Department of Architectural Composition at Cracow University of Technology in the form of a competition entitled ‘Concrete Architecture – Play of Solids – House in the Landscape’ co-organised with the Association of Cement Producers. Over the years of competition, it has been noticed that aspects related to the matter and technology of concrete pose great difficulty to the students. To equip students with the tools to understand concrete architecture, lectures given by experts in concrete technology and contracting have been organised to familiarise them with actual issues related to architectural concrete technology, both in purely theoretical and primarily practical terms. The method introduced has resulted in increased student awareness of this technology, an increase in the technical level of competition entries, and a creative approach to designing concrete matter.]]>
<![CDATA[Concrete architecture workshops for students as a way to Project-Based Learning]]> Fri, 02 Dec 2022 10:07:46 +0100 Kozłowski, Tomasz
rodzaj: rozdział/fragment książki
Abstrakt: The author tries to describe a modification of the teaching approach during workshops conducted at the Faculty of Architecture at Cracow University of Technology. One of the reasons for the change was to improve the quality of education. During the development of projects, students usually use theoretical knowledge found in books and copy designs from architects. A lack of realism or understanding of concrete technology has been noticed. The change in the organisation of the workshops described in the study consisted of introducing project realization as a successive stage in teaching. The students were to make a concrete throne. The primary objective was the transition from theoretical to practical teaching. The change forced participants to take a different and more creative approach to designing a small architectural work and to use a specific material. The transformation of the theme enabled them to acquire new skills other than those in paper-based academic works.]]>

<![CDATA[Non-avant-garde contemporary architecture]]> Mon, 21 Nov 2022 12:36:31 +0100 Kozłowski, Tomasz
rodzaj: rozdział/fragment książki
Abstrakt: Architects try to pass for innovators. Novelty and the negation of memorised shapes have always been part of the artists’ activities. But can architecture and art change eternally? There are moments in art when recalling familiar shapes, though in new scales and other colours, is considered a path to novelty. Duchamp showed the artists the possibility of using a new path to uniqueness. However, his games with objects were sometimes unsightly, which is a somewhat questionable path in architecture addressed to a mass audience. Thus, familiar shapes appear in contemporary architecture and the slightly earlier one presented in a different, more innovative way. Novelty does not necessarily arise through the negation of the ‘old’. Architects want to create works that resemble nothing, yet are embraced by the public. This is a dilemma for the creators: they want to be avant-garde, but investors require them to build a form suitable for advertising. Perhaps this will be a rediscovered path for the emergence of other unknown architecture.]]>

<![CDATA[The death of avant-garde or return to the roots?]]> Mon, 21 Nov 2022 11:47:01 +0100 Gyurkovich, Mateusz
rodzaj: rozdział/fragment książki
Abstrakt: The aim of the research is to present the avant-garde realizations of recent years. Literature research and the analysis of implementation prove that social ideas, the negation of historicizing forms and traditional urbanism as an emanation of oppression were at the source of the avant-garde movements of the 20th century. Following the strangeness of the form, for a hundred years the social sensitivity was lost. An analysis of the recent architectural awards proves the rejection of the mainstream of star architecture. As a result, it cannot be proved whether this means the death of the avant-garde.]]>

<![CDATA[Avant-garde city blocks and contemporary housing hybrids]]> Mon, 21 Nov 2022 11:08:36 +0100 Bigaj, Przemysław
rodzaj: rozdział/fragment książki
Abstrakt: The paper discusses contemporary city blocks and hybrid housing whose uniqueness may predestine them as present-day architectural avant-garde. The research analyses selected iconic examples of multifamily architecture whose experimental approach to shaping form and communal spaces may indicate their avant-garde character. The temporal scope covers buildings constructed after 2000. The territorial scope focuses on the area of Western culture in the broadest sense (Europe, USA). The examples described here have a distinctive and original spatial idea to show the main directions of transformation and introduce typologically new, often one-off, solutions with a prototypical design approach. Thanks to contemporary engineering, technological and material possibilities, even the boldest visions can find grounds to realise works that go beyond the usual patterns, offering a pretext to consider them avant-garde. The research findings indicate significant features that should shape the present-day architectural work that aspires to be avant-garde. ]]>
<![CDATA[The production process of foamed geopolymers with the use of various foaming agents]]> Mon, 21 Nov 2022 10:09:45 +0100 Bazan, Patrycja; Łach, Michał; Kozub, Barbara; Figiela, Beata; Korniejenko, Kinga
rodzaj: rozdział/fragment książki
Abstrakt: The paper presents the possibility of producing foamed geopolymer materials with various foaming agents. Geopolymer is an amorphous aluminosilicate polymer made from the synthesis of silicon (Si) and aluminum (Al), geologically obtained from minerals. Geopolymers contain long chains (copolymers) of aluminum–silicon and aluminum, stabilizing metal cations, most often sodium, potassium, lithium or calcium, and bound water, in addition, there are usually various mixed phases: silicon oxide, unreacted aluminosilicate substrate, and—sometimes—crystallized aluminosilicates of the type zeolite. Most methods of geopolymer synthesis come down to one process: The fine and dried pozzolanic materials are mixed with an aqueous solution of a suitable silicate with the addition of a strong base—usually concentrated sodium or potassium hydroxide. The resulting paste behaves like cement. Fly ash from the Heat and Power Plant in Skawina (Poland) was used as a precursor for the production of geopolymer. The activation process was performed with a 10-molar solution of sodium hydroxide NaOH in combination with a solution of sodium silicate. The foaming agents were perhydrol, aluminum powder, and the Sika® Lightcrete-400 foaming saucer—an organic surfactant for the production of low-emission, lightweight, porous concrete. The produced foamed geopolymer materials were subjected to strength and thermal conductivity tests. The properties of the foams are related to the used foaming agent, but it is not the only factor affecting the quality of the materials. In the production of samples, the crucial factors are mixing the materials, the amount of the added additive, and the temperature of the geopolymerization process.]]>
