Architektoniczna awangarda zapisała się w krajobrazie miast bezprecedensową liczbą skrajnie oryginalnych, wymykających się uznanym kryteriom oceny estetycznej budowli. W eksponowanych miejscach zabytkowych śródmieść pojawiły się realizacje zrywające z miejscową tradycją architektoniczną i ciągłością tkanki przestrzennej, wyabstrahowane z kontekstu, budzące kontrowersje.
The architectural avant-garde movement has introduced into urban landscape an unprecedented amount of extremely original buildings – contrasted with surrounding area, insaisissable of accepted standards of esthetic evaluation. The new realizations – breaking ranks of local architectural tradition and continuity of urban pattern, isolated from spatial context, evoking controversies – have appeared in prominent sites of monumental central districts. Starting from Eiffel Tower, through other breakthrough realizations, pressing new aesthetics and scale radically different from surroundings in historical landscape – we can trace a great career of these buildings, so manifestly distinguishing at the background of monumental cityscape. The measure of their success is popularity – which is not the consequence of harmony of architectural form or good results of fitting it into surrounding landscape, but rather derives from negation of these values. Passing of time, subsequent functioning of controversial buildings in the context of the cultural cityscape point at their gradual acceptance. They become absorbed by pluralistic identity of cities and many of them have gained a particular position and meaning within urban structure as the elements of spatial identification, distinctive forms, landmarks, the elements of "mental landscape", that build the identity of the city in the same way as monuments do.
